The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce is hosting an information session for business leaders to learn how tariffs could impact them.
Before the session, local businesses were asked to share their thoughts with the Chamber.
“The strong resounding theme is that the uncertainty itself has become a barrier on its own,” said Stacey Brensrud, Cranbrook Chamber Executive Director.
“We’re not just talking about the tariffs on their own, we’re seeing that the unknown is not a favourable environment to do business for many reasons. It’s not favourable to consumers either.”
Brensrud says this uncertainty is causing businesses and consumers to be more hesitant and careful.
“There are a lot of people who are holding back on making investments and decisions because they’re just not sure of what’s going to happen,” said Brensrud.
“Businesses need information, clear guidance and reference tools so they can make decisions based on facts. That is what we are going to be advocating for.”
The session will cover a wide range of topics, including supply chain diversification strategies, impact statements and financial planning among others.
“We invited a guest speaker, Michael Hoher, an advisor with Export Navigator,” said Brensrud.
“The content is going to be nimble and it’s going to be adjusted as the situation changes.”
Brensrud says the Chamber is planning a long-term series to help businesses navigate the tumultuous relationship between Canada and the United States.
“This is not going to be a one-and-done issue. As everything unfolds with the tariffs, the situational impacts are also going to change,” said Brensrud.
“We are exploring options to bring something with a little more longevity to our membership, so businesses know they have someone they can go to and ask. It’s an opportunity for information-sharing and networking between businesses as well, just to hear what others are experiencing and doing or what kind of resources they found.”
The Chamber luncheon will go ahead on March 18 at Ella’s, with a presentation and Q&A session led by Hoher.
