Columbia Valley firefighters responded to a late-night smoldering bin fire at the Edgewater Transfer Station on Thursday.
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) says the call came in just after 11 p.m.
“We had a small fire in the main garbage bin that resulted in heavy smoke,” said Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Thomas Dobbin.
Dobbin and two firefighters from the Edgewater Fire Department responded to the call and quickly snuffed out the small fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Dobbin says this is a good reminder to properly dispose of ashes.
“With the colder temperatures, more people are using their wood-burning appliances and this is a good reminder to ensure that ashes are fully cooled and cold to the touch before transporting them for disposal,” said Dobbin.
“All of our rural transfer stations have a designated bin specifically for ashes and ashes should never be placed in the main garbage bin, even if they are cold.”
