Despite the frigid weather in Fernie this week, the outdoor rink in Fernie isn’t open and it’s not planned to be.
City staff says there are multiple reasons for the rink’s closure this year, including the temporary amenity building unable to be occupied and needs to be removed.
The building was necessary for flooding and maintaining the ice.
City staff says they have also had a hard time finding volunteers despite outreach efforts.
The site of the rink is also designated for the Elk Valley Field House Society’s proposed facility to replace the closed community hall.
City staff says the outdoor rink isn’t as needed anymore since they’ve expanded skating opportunities at the Memorial Arena.
