The Ministry of Forests is conducting a fuel reduction project in the Wasa area.
Work has begun on treating 75 hectares east of Wasa Lake.
The work will target ground and ladder fuels, while all trees over 22 centimetres in diameter at breast height will be left alone.
RDEK board chair Rob Gay says the need for fire mitigation has increased as homes get built in and around forests.
“Previously, a lot of the fires were in the woods and backcountry. Yes, we were losing timber, but homes and human lives weren’t in danger,” said Gay.
“Now a lot of us have built our homes in the woods, so we have a different level we need to be cautious of.”
Signage is posted at entry points to the work area and residents are asked to avoid the site.
