Design work on the new K-7 school coming to Fernie has begun.

Back in August, the provincial government announced $33 million for the facility.

Despite the B.C. government projecting a deficit of $9.4 billion in 2024/25, Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma says they don’t anticipate any changes to the funding announced for the school.

“That work is in the design phase and there is nominal funding set aside in our budget for that project,” she said.

“I don’t anticipate any changes to our ability to fund the project.”

The timeline from the province has the school construction being completed by 2027.

It is expected to have room for nearly 300 students and will include a learning centre, Indigenous education space and a warming kitchen to support community programs.

A childcare centre may also be included in the design.
