Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Project almost complete

Work on the Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Project is almost finished, with only a few finishing touches remaining.

Electoral Area F Director Susan Clovechok says the project has reached substantial completion.

“While there is still additional work required before full and final completion, this stage is significant for the community as the new barrier is now fully functional in the event of a debris event,” said Clovechok.

The project area is still considered an active construction site and is closed to the public while several unseen safety hazards remain.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of people staying out of the work area. It is signed and fenced, and we are asking people to respect the closure and stay out,” said Clovechok.

Insulation currently covering the structure will be removed once weather conditions improve in the spring.

From there, work will resume on railings, minor earthworks, seeding and site cleanup along with additional fencing on the barrier.

Grant funding covered over 98 per cent of the $13.6 million projects, which included the construction of a large barrier that will reduce the debris flow risk in the community.

The Regional District of East Kootenay expects the project to be fully wrapped up by the summer.
