The City of Cranbrook has started implementing new bike lanes as part of the city’s active transportation plan.
The plan is to better connect the downtown, college, parks and trail networks.
“Following the creation of the city’s active transportation plan and in discussion with council staff, we have begun the implementation of bike lanes and active transportation infrastructure,” said engineering and development services director Mike Matejka.
“Much of this work is being done through line painting and signage with a focus on connecting the major nodes in the community.”
Residents will notice the changes near 14th Avenue and 2nd Street North and while it has sparked some confusion, Matejka says the city will be working on education and finding the best ways to roll out these road changes.
“The installations that were done this year we will be looking to see if there are any tweaks or adjustments that can be done physically in addition to being able to better educate on how these are supposed to be navigated,” he said.
City staff say with the success of the e-scooter program and an increase in resident cycling, these changes will be necessary to ensure road safety.
