The City of Fernie is renewing its contract with Recycle BC to continue the curbside recycling program for at least the next four years.

The city’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the month.

Project engineer Joanna Line says there are small changes with the new contract.

“There have been a few changes made to the program that would be reflected in the new contract,” she said.

“The contaminated materials allowed will increase from three per cent to five per cent, and the curbside collection fees will increase from m $37.40 to $41.00.”

City staff are still working to reduce the amount of bin contamination in the community.

The city received a letter from Recycle BC earlier this year that contamination levels were at 15 per cent.

“While limiting contamination in users’ curbside carts has been more effort than initially estimated, staff are still working to create a clear and efficient strategy to deal with it,” Line said.

The new contract will last for four years.
