The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR) gave a grant to the Southeast Kootenay School District (SD5) from its Cranbrook Past & Present Teachers’ Legacy Fund.
CFKR Executive Director Lynnette Wray says this was the Cranbrook Past & Present Teachers’ Legacy Fund’s second year of granting.
“Our first grant was in 2023 to support the elementary band program. Our 2024 grant went to the SD5 resource centre to purchase class sets of books,” said Wray.
“Those resources will go all across the school district to support kids and teachers all across the district.”
The fund is backed by the Cranbrook District Teachers’ Association and the Cranbrook Retired Teachers’ Association, who help choose the grant recipients.
“it was started in 2019 by Don and Linda Holt, who were long-time teachers in Cranbrook. This was a real passion project for them – Don passed away a few years ago, but he put his heart and soul into this fund,” said Wray.
“It’s a great way to recognize the positive, long-lasting impact of all these dedicated teachers we have here.”
Wray says teachers have rallied around this Legacy Fund since its inception.
“It’s wonderful to see the teaching community come together around this fund. It has kind of become a central place where people remember and celebrate teachers when they pass away or retire,” said Wray.
“The grants are meant to support student success and wellness and it enhances the public school experience in Cranbrook.”
