A family on their way to a minor hockey tournament in Fernie was involved in a serious head-on collision that killed one child and left their mother, sibling and another woman in critical condition.
Idaho State Police (ISP) officials say the family was travelling north along US Highway 95 near Elmira, Idaho on the morning of Friday, November 22 when the crash happened.
According to the ISP, a 61-year-old man from Moyie Springs, Idaho, was travelling southbound in a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck and moved into the northbound lane attempting to pass multiple vehicles.
The vehicle collided head-on with a 2008 Ford Edge driven by a 33-year-old woman from Otis Orchards, Washington travelling northbound.
Police officials say the man driving the pickup was taken to a local hospital. The woman driving the Ford Edge, her 33-year-old female passenger and a child were also transported to a hospital.
ISP officials say a fourth passenger in the Ford Edge, a child, succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene.
The Cranbrook Minor Hockey Association confirmed that the family was travelling to Fernie for a minor hockey tournament when they were involved in the crash.
“The U15 Cranbrook Bucks and the U15 Spokane Jr.A Chiefs held a moment of silence before their game to show respect and to honour this family,” said the Cranbrook Minor Hockey Association.
“Cranbrook Minor Hockey would like to extend our deepest condolences to this family and all of their extended family and friends.”
Idaho State Police continue to investigate the accident and are searching for any witnesses, dash camera, business surveillance or any other video footage from the public.
“This investigation is critical to understanding what led to this tragic collision, and we believe someone may have additional information or footage that can help piece together the events leading up to the crash,” said Trooper Travis Bucher, ISP District 1.
“Even small details that seem insignificant could provide vital clues to help bring closure to the families affected by this devastating loss.”
