Winter weather in the forecast has Cranbrook’s Public Works crews getting ready to deal with snow and ice.

City officials say snow removal equipment is on standby as Environment Canada predicts snowfall to hit the region this week.

Plow crews will typically go to specific roads first, with major streets, hospital zones, emergency access routes, roads with steep grades, and transit routes being their top priority.

“During heavy or continuous snowfall, we will focus on these routes first, clearing them repeatedly until the storm subsides. Once conditions improve, we will move to secondary routes and beyond,” said city staff.

City officials say residents also play a role in snow removal.

“Please clear the snow and ice from all sidewalks bordering your property within 24 hours after a snowstorm,” said city staff.

“Keeping street drains clear of snow and ice and ensuring fire hydrants are accessible is also important. Together, we can ensure a safe and accessible winter for all.

Drivers are urged to refrain from parking on the road during and immediately after a snowstorm so plows can clear the street more easily.
