Police in Fernie are investigating an animal cruelty complaint after a report of an apple spiked with nails.

Police say a resident emailed the BC Conservation Service on Nov. 3 saying that their dog had found a discarded apple in James White Park and started to eat it.

The owner says they saw something strange and took the apple away and found two large nails forced into it.

The BC Conservation Service forwarded the email to the Elk Valley RCMP and they are investigating it as cruelty to animals.

Police say they received a number of messages after the incident blew up on social media.

An officer went to the scene but was not able to find any evidence and attempts to contact the original complainant have gone unanswered.

Police are asking witnesses and anyone with more information to contact the Elk Valley detachment to assist in the investigation.
