City of Cranbrook to develop user group storage policy

City of Cranbrook staff will be looking at creating a user group policy for storage on city property.

Historically the city has offered free storage for community user groups, but an increase in groups wanting storage has caused a strain.

“We have storage, we’ve had storage for years for some of these user groups and we now have new user groups who are asking for storage and we really don’t have an answer for them,” said recreation and culture director Trevor Thors.

He says other communities often charge fees or don’t offer storage at all and whatever Cranbrook decides to do will probably look at least a little different than the current format.

“This issue is relevant everywhere and different communities have come up with different solutions, but it seems like almost all communities are having to backtrack on a lot of past precedent,” he added.

One option was for the city to purchase sea cans that could be placed in common recreation areas in the community to be rented out.

Councillor Norma Blissett says it’s important that the city continues to at least offer storage options.

“We need to really appreciate the recreation these groups are providing to the Cranbrook community at a minimal cost,” she said.

“It needs to be recognized and I do think it’s important for us as a city to help them with their storage needs.”

Staff will develop a policy and bring it back to council in a future meeting.
