Preliminary results shows Kimberley rural protection service shot down

Electoral Area C residents have decided not to support the establishment of a Kimberley rural fire protection service.

In the Area C vote, 120 residents voted no while 63 voted yes.

If it had been approved, the City of Kimberley would have provided fire protection to properties within the St. Mary Lake Road and Wycliffe areas that are 13km from the fire hall.

“Taxpayers would pay for the service, but they would be considered semi-protected from an insurance perspective. That often means considerable savings in your insurance costs,” said RDEK board chair Rob Gay.

“The City would also benefit because we would need to provide another pump truck. That could be used in Kimberley and in the rural areas as well. It would also allow us some additional operations funding.”

The chief election officer will declare the official election results on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
