Cranbrook house fire claims one life

One person has died following a house fire in the early morning hours in Cranbrook.

Emergency Services arrived on the scene to find a single-family dwelling engulfed in flames at 1:30 a.m.

Two residents escaped the home and were treated and released on site, but Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services Director Scott Driver says a third individual succumbed to their injuries despite the best efforts of responders.

“Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy,” said Driver.

“We urge the community to take this terrible incident as a reminder of the importance of smoke alarms and we urge everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home.”

The fire caused damage to the houses on either side but the occupants were evacuated safely.

Emergency crews will be on the scene well into the day and traffic will be disrupted.

The RCMP and Fire Commissioner’s Office will be working with the fire department to determine a cause.
