Cranbrook fire chief happy with completed prescribed burns

Fire chief Scott Driver is pleased with the number of prescribed burns getting off the ground around Cranbrook.

Three burns were conducted by the fire department in September.

A 10-hectare burn took place near the airport, another burn covered 33 hectares near the Phillips Reservoir and a small burn took place near Moir Park.

Driver says the department also took part in the joint training exercise between ʔaq̓am and the BC Wildfire Service.

“I do want to highlight a number of collaborative efforts happening in this area,” he said.

“This year was the very first year that the Province of British Columbia held a prescribed fire training exchange. They held it in Ê”aqÌ“am and they did use the Moir Park burn as one of the sights for their practical experience and training”

He says it’s a testament to the skill and knowledge this area has towards prescribed burns.

“They’re doing it to increase the capacity in the province to conduct prescribed burning like this because we in the southeast are doing a really good job of getting these projects off the ground.”

Driver says the department will continue to work with neighbours and partners to develop comprehensive wildfire risk reduction strategies.
