Students from around the world can get a chance to experience life in the Canadian Rockies thanks to a program organized through local school districts.
Danielle Warren, Director of the Rocky Mountain International Student Program says School Districts 5 and 6 participate as host schools.
“The schools were excited about having a cultural program where Canadian students can learn a little bit about different cultures and languages,” said Warren.
“It’s a way to internationalize the schools and local communities.”
Warren says the international students are focused on their academics, but will often get involved in the broader community.
“We’ve had international students volunteering with the Legion serving meals, with local fire departments, at minor hockey games,” said Warren.
“They really make the most of their year here. For the schools, it’s really great to have that level of enthusiasm, excitement and engagement. The friendships that are made between Canadian and international students are really long-lasting as well.”
Warren says the students will often form a deep connection with their host families.
“We have families who have connected with students who have returned home but continue to visit and stay in touch, and we’ve had families even go overseas to visit the students as well,” said Warren.
“There is a real opportunity to make global connections and make a real difference in a young person’s life.”
The Rocky Mountain International Student Program is hosting a series of prospective host parent information sessions over the coming weeks, and you can find the schedule here.
“We’re looking for families who are interested in sharing their life, and traditions, showing off our beautiful part of the world and who are active and excited to engage with students of different cultures,” said Warren.
“Our communities, especially Cranbrook, Kimberley and Invermere, have been absolutely wonderful in welcoming our students.”
