Cranbrook applying for provincial grant for Gold Creek Dam reconstruction

The City of Cranbrook is looking at another funding source to secure a grant for the Gold Creek Dam reconstruction.

The city is applying for $5 million from the province’s Community Emergency Preparedness Grant.

Earlier this year the city applied for $5 million from the Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding but has yet to hear back.

The project has a total budget of $14.5 million and if both grants are awarded the city would still be on the hook for $4.5 million in project costs.

Mayor Wayne Price says it’s a project that the city waited too long on and needs to get done.

“This is a priority project for the city of Cranbrook,” he said.

“This is just one of those ones that really slipped through the cracks over the years and now has become a critical project.”

The old dam was designed to store about 30 megalitres of water but is currently only able to hold one or two megalitres.
