An overnight fire at the Wasa Transfer Station’s wood waste pile saw a full response from staff, contractors and the BC Wildfire Service.
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) says the fire broke out on Monday night.
“The fire fully involved several of the piles in our wood waste area,” said RDEK Solid Waste Superintendent Jim Penson.
“The fire was contained to that area of origin and did not spread further on-site.”
The BC Wildfire Service was on the scene and completed assessments before they left.
An RDEK contractor remained at the site through the night to manage the fire.
“We are grateful to our contractor, the equipment operator and the members of the BC Wildfire Service who responded to the call, and very grateful the fire remained isolated and did not spread beyond the wood waste pile,” said Penson.
Contractors came back to the site on Tuesday to ensure there were no lasting hotspots.
The wood pile was closed until the fire was completely snuffed out, but the rest of the transfer station remained open.
RDEK officials said this is the second fire at the Wasa Transfer Station in the past few weeks, with the last impacting the metal pile.
