Cranbrook council approves Oasis at the Dunes zoning amendment

Cranbrook city council has approved a zoning amendment that would allow the Oasis at the Dune development to move ahead.

The proposed development will bring 10 single-family lots, 18 duplex units, 54 multi-family townhouse units and 60 condo units to the St. Mary Neighbourhood in the Shadow Mountain area.

The development will increase the housing density in the area, which councillor Mike Peabody says will help reduce service costs.

“Given the fact that we do have a community that is so far outside of the traditional city limits of Cranbrook, the best way to reduce the cost of providing services out in that area is to increase the amount of density,” he said.

The amendment was up for a third reading on Oct. 16, 2023 and has been in limbo needing Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) approval before council could adopt it.

MOTI had no issues with the bylaw change, but the highway intersection with Parnaby Road will require improvements and a design drawing will need to be submitted and approved before development can begin.
