Kimberley Civic Centre lead paint remediation work to go ahead in October

Lead paint remediation work in the Kimberley Civic Centre is set to go ahead next week.

City officials say staff noticed paint flaking off the walls and roof on the east side of the building’s interior last month.

The affected areas were promptly blocked off for public safety while a hazardous materials risk assessment (HMRA) was conducted.

Tests confirmed the presence of lead paint, so the city decided to begin the remediation process.

City officials say the work is unlikely to cause any more disruptions to arena operations.

“We don’t anticipate it to impact the Dynamiters games or other events any more than it already has,” said Shane Castle, Project Manager.

“About half the seating is closed off as a safety precaution.

Proteck Hazardous Materials Management Ltd will be on the job on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The city say the work will likely be finished by Friday, Oct 18, just in time for the Dynamiters’ to hit the ice for a home game against the Fernie Ghostriders.

“As we work through remediation we’ll do our best to open up those sections as they become available,” said Castle.

“There are currently some areas that are sectioned off, and we ask that people stay away from there.”
