The City of Fernie will be rolling out its new curbside organics program on Monday and Tuesday.
“It is a change to our community waste collection process, but it does have the advantage of diverting all that good organic material that would otherwise go to a landfill,” said Mayor Nic Milligan.
Organic waste will be taken to the RDEK’s new Elk Valley organics processing and receiving facility, but it isn’t quite ready.
“The construction on our Elk Valley organics processing and receiving facility is not quite complete and while we are working to get the required infrastructure in place as quickly as possible, there will be an overlap between when the curbside collection starts in Fernie and when we can receive it at our facility in Sparwood,” said RDEK solid waste superintendent Jim Penson.
Crews are still installing electric bear fencing.
“We expect a two or three-week overlap between when collection starts in Fernie and when we can accept the materials in Sparwood,” Penson said.
“As a result, we will be taking the collected organics to the Fernie Transfer Station and stockpiling them in the unused third bay within the transfer station building.”
Organics will be collected once a week for the first few months so residents can get used to the new process.
Starting on Dec. 5, the collection will be bi-weekly.
