Late-night parties at Windermere Beach still an issue for Columbia Valley RCMP

Late-night parties at Windermere Beach continue to be an ongoing issue, despite RCMP efforts.

Columbia Valley RCMP Sgt. Ed deJong said they have been working with the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) to try to put a stop to the littering and vandalism.

“We’ve been getting complaints about this for the last couple of years during the summer months. We got in contact with the RDEK on this about a month ago,” said deJong.

Police officials said most of the people attending these late-night parties are youth, who have mostly been cooperative with the RCMP once officers arrive.

Columbia Valley RCMP will step up their presence in the area in response to continuing parties.

“It’s a lot of littering – broken glass and things – that are causing problems in the beach area,” said deJong.

“We’re going to do more patrols and do a little bit more enforcement activity. Hopefully, that will get the message across that these kids cannot hang out on a public beach that’s closed after 10 p.m.”

Windermere Beach is open to the public during the day, but it is closed nightly.
