Sparwood councillor granted leave for provincial election campaign

Sparwood councillor Sam Atwal will be taking a leave of absence from Sept. 20 to Oct. to campaign for Provincial MLA.

Councillor Amy Cardozo will be filling in as acting mayor for September and October.

Taking a leave isn’t required but it will let Atwal focus on the campaign.

“Just for public knowledge, the legislation is very clear there is no reason why councillor Atwal would have to vacate his seat or take a leave during the campaign process,” said councillor Steve Kallies.

“This is part of his decision to pay full attention to it.”

Mayor David Wilks said it also makes council run smoother.

“It makes it cleaner for council too, because a lot of the time we are dealing with provincial legislation,” he said.

“When you have someone that’s running for MLA it’s awkward, so it’s cleaner this way for council.”

If successful Atwal will have to resign from council.

He is running for the BC NDP against incumbent Tom Shypitka of BC United and Pete Davis of the BC Conservatives.

The campaign officially kicks off on Sept. 21 with final voting day on Oct. 19.
