Charges approved in Cranbrook resident’s 2023 death

An Alberta man was charged with criminal negligence causing death for his involvement in an incident that killed a Cranbrook resident last year.

Elk Valley RCMP officials said first responders were sent out to a call regarding a ‘marine incident/sudden death’ on July 30, 2023, shortly before 2:30 a.m.

Investigators arrived in the Kikomun-Newgate Road area and found that a side-by-side (UTV) tipped over and trapped the passenger underwater.

The victim, a 27-year-old Cranbrook resident, was still stuck in the upside-down UTV in the water when investigators arrived.

“The driver, a 35-year-old Alberta man, had remained on scene and after the initial investigation was arrested, then transported from the area to the Fernie RMCP office where he provided a warned statement and was released by way of an Undertaking – which was later nullified due to the length of the ongoing investigation,” said Elk Valley RCMP.

Crown Council decided to approve charges against the driver, Daniel Antcil, after a lengthy investigation that involved a search warrant and multiple witness statements.

Antcil will appear in Fernie Law Courts for his first court date on Sept. 12, 2024.

“Elk Valley Regional RCMP continue to support the family of the victim and offer our condolences on the loss of their family and friend,” said Elk Valley RCMP.
