The International Joint Commission (IJC) is gearing up for an online webinar about pollution in the Elk/Kootenay watershed.
The one-hour info session will start at 6:30 p.m. MT (5:30 p.m. PT) on Tuesday, August 6.
All interested parties are invited to attend, and Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka said he would like to observe the process.
“I would 100 per cent be in favour of being at the table in some capacity, whether it’s as a fly on the wall or actually putting forward my observations on what’s happening here in Kootenay East,” said Shypitka.
“I have a lot of skin in the game, as far as being a long-time resident here – part of five generations – and I want to continue seeing this area flourish.”
IJC officials said the webinar would include a presentation and question-and-answer period focusing on their activities related to the establishment of a study board and the IJC’s role in creating a Terms of Reference for a Governance Body.
This board will report and make recommendations on water pollution within the Elk-Kootenay watershed.
The IJC has come into action in response to a request from the US and Canadian governments, with collaboration from the Ktunaxa Nation.
