The City of Cranbrook has ordered the owner of the former Knight’s Hall to clean up the property.
On Dec. 19, 2023, a fire destroyed the three-story Knights Hall building and a remediation order was issued for the demolition.
Contractors completed the demolition between Dec. 29-31 and the building remains were piled up on the property.
It was the owner’s responsibility to get rid of the debris, which has not happened.
Building and bylaw services manager Paul Heywood said there are a number of health concerns on the property.
“We’ve done three different studies on this site. We are aware of low amounts of asbestos, low amounts of lead and a sizable hole on the property,” he said.
“We’ve been talking to the owner about maintaining the fence as the fence has had numerous issues and basically no action has taken place.”
The owner now has 30 days to safely remove the building debris and fill the unsafe basement space.
If that doesn’t happen the city will hire a contractor and charge the owner through increased property taxes.
