Elkford Mayor pleased with community development

Elkford Mayor Steve Fairbairn is pleased with the direction the community is going with several developments on the horizon.

One of which is being created by the Ktunaxa Nation.

“We’ve had a land sale agreement and land lease with Ka∙kin, so in the next few years, we’ll have a purpose-built rental apartment going up,” said Fairbairn.

“We hare leasing land for a temporary use worker accommodation. It’s meant to host workers who are building the apartments and other construction projects in town.”

The worker accommodation is also available to contractors who may need beds for their staff during smaller developments.

Progress is also being made in Elkford’s downtown core revitalization, which made it into the BC Builds Program.

“In the next few months, the people involved in the process will evaluate the builds and decide what is appropriate, then contracts may go out,” said Fairbairn.

“In the 50 years of the town’s history, this could be a huge change.”

Construction is also underway on the community’s future affordable senior’s home.

Fairbairn said he is cautiously optimistic about the community’s growth.

“It’s really exciting, but you have to be a little nervous at the same time, because as things change, those changes could bring other things that may not always be positive,” said Fairbairn.

“So, what are the unintended consequences of all of this? We keep our eye on it and try not to lose the forest for the trees, but it is really exciting to see concrete change coming to town.”
