SD5 preps spaces at other schools for Amy Woodland students

Southeast Kootenay School District (SD5) is clearing space for students and staff at other facilities for the upcoming school year, as Amy Woodland Elementary will likely remain closed.

Jason Tichauer, Director of Student Learning, said the school district is keeping classrooms together.

“All 13 classes from Amy Woodland will go to our other elementary schools and our two grade six classes are at Laurie Middle School,” said Tichauer.

“That’s the school they’ll be going to a year after anyway.”

The additional students and staff may put some pressure on the other schools.

“Amy Woodland was going to be fully staffed, so we have those staff resources for the kids, but it will definitely put some strain on spaces,” said Tichauer.

“We didn’t have 13 classrooms sitting empty. We did our best to carve out respectable places for kids to learn. In some cases, we had to displace other programs, but we were able to make it work.”

Families have already been informed about where their children will attend school in September.

The school district is still unsure whether Amy Woodland can be repaired or if it needs to be completely rebuilt.
