Fernie asking residents to restrict water use

Fernie residents are asked to restrict their water use as both of the community’s water sources face strain.

Officials said demand is starting to outpace capacity at the James White Wells, while high turbidity has been reported in Fairy Creek.

“The City of Fernie is asking residents to reduce their water use to conserve water,” said city officials. “Water conservation is important to help avoid the need to issue a water quality advisory.”

Property owners with odd-numbered addresses are asked to water on odd-numbered days, while even-numbered can water on even-numbered days.

You are urged to keep lawn watering to a two-hour limit per day, but watering for flowers, vegetable gardens, decorative plants, trees and shrubs is not restricted.

Washing of sidewalks and driveways is not allowed unless it is for health and safety purposes or to prepare a surface for painting.

This voluntary step comes as the city is in the midst of discussions to formalize water regulation bylaws, which will be up for discussion on Tuesday.
