Police seeking witnesses to Amy Woodland Elementary School fire

Emergency crews were active early Sunday morning battling a fire at Cranbrook’s Amy Woodland Elementary School.

Cranbrook RCMP officials said first responders jumped into action shortly after 4:15 a.m. and found a fire in the building’s gymnasium.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services was on the scene with 19 firefighters and four pieces of apparatus when police arrived.

“Nobody was hurt, but there’s certainly extensive smoke damage throughout the school,” said Deputy Fire Chief Dan MacKinnon.

The cause of the fire is unknown for now.

“At this time the fire is under investigation. We are looking for anyone who might have any camera or dashcam footage in the area of the school between the hours of 9:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. to contact the Cranbrook office,“ said Cranbrook RCMP spokesperson Cst. Katie Forgeron.
