Fernie’s 2024 sidewalk program is getting underway as the city looks to improve active transportation.
Mayor Nic Milligan said more sidewalks will connect to the Annex Dike.
“The sidewalk program this summer is to connect some elements of our active transportation plan,” he said.
“It will be sidewalks that connect to our Annex Dike which was paved in the last couple of years.”
He said it will help people avoid walking on the road especially if they have a stroller or are with kids.
“It allows people safe walking access through the neighbourhoods and connects them to those active transportation elements.”
Work will be done on 7th Street from 11th Avenue to 9th Avenue, 9th Street from the Annex Dike to 9th Avenue and Ridgemont Avenue from 31 Ridgemont Avenue to 51 Ridgemont Avenue.
The new sidewalks will be wide enough to accommodate two strollers or wheelchairs travelling in opposite directions.
While construction is ongoing, 7th Street and 9th Street will be converted into one-way roads.
Ridgemont Avenue will remain two-way, but on-street parking will be suspended until construction is complete.
