Stanley Cup Final features another Kootenay connection

Edmonton Oilers goalie, Stuart Skinner, might be in Florida playing for his first Stanley Cup, but his family was watching on from Cranbrook and Kimberley.

Skinner’s parents, Sam and Susan Skinner, were in Cranbrook over the weekend dogsitting for their daughter. One of their three kids living in the area.

“We have two daughters in Cranbrook and a son in Kimberley, so it’s nice when we can come down and see all three of them.” said Sam and Susan.

Stuart is the youngest of nine kids, and being born in Edmonton, Sam said it was cool to see him get drafted by the Oilers.

“We’re really excited for him and he works really hard,” he said.

“Being in his hometown, what are the odds?”

Being a goaltender requires a lot of mental toughness, which Skinner said his son has been working on since starting in the position.

“Since he’s been very young it’s been a mental game,” he added.

“You can only control what you can control, you have to not worry about what happened. Mentally he’s extremely strong.”

The Oilers are down 1-0 in their series against the Florida Panthers. Game 2 starts tonight at 6 p.m.
