Fernie Aquatic Centre limiting hours in June

The Fernie Aquatic Centre will be reducing its operating hours in June due to some staff shortages.

“What we’re looking at for June is closing in the mornings, but being open in the afternoon and the evening,” said parks and recreation manager Jacquie Hill.

“When we were looking at our programs and pre-existing bookings this had the least amount of impact.”

Pool occupancy will also be lowered.

She said a lot of their younger staff have other commitments during this time of the year.

“We are looking at reduced staff levels coming up and this reduction in staff availability is due to grad time,” she said.

“There’s a priority for a lot of our staff who are casual students to exam prep and there is also a week long celebration of graduation.”

There is also some sickness going around and vacation days they have to honour.

Hill said it’s hard to find people who can fill in.

“It can be very difficult sometimes in a pinch to try to find someone to cover that shift because lifeguard and teaching swim lessons is a specialized certification. We can’t just pick up anybody.”

The aquatic centre has been back to pre-pandemic operating hours since last July.
