Fernie’s curbside recycling program has been experiencing some growing pains as residents adjust to the new system.
According to the city’s recycling audit, there has been a 15 per cent contamination rate, which is considered a failing grade.
Mayor Nic Milligan said it was disappointing, but not unexpected.
“When we switched over to RecycleBC, we anticipated that there would be some lag in understanding the new parameters,” said Milligan. “The chief is that you’re no longer allowed to bag your recycling.”
Milligan said this gives the city an opportunity to improve.
“We have organics collection coming online potentially in early July of this year. That will present another opportunity for education on organics and our entire suite of waste collection, so people understand where everything goes,” said Milligan.
Milligan says there has been a positive reception to Fernie’s curbside collection program.
“I think people overall are pleased that the city is trying to improve the recycling process and working closer with RecycleBC to make sure we’re diverting that stuff out of the waste stream,” said Milligan.
