Fernie issues water quality advisory in response to high turbidity

Fernie is under a water quality advisory, as tests have found heightened turbidity levels in the water supply.

The city said the levels have improved to a ‘Fair’ rating, and the boil water notice was downgraded to a water quality advisory.

“While the associated health risks are minimal, the City of Fernie and Interior Health recommend that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice,” said city officials.

The city said water meant for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making juice or ice, or brushing teeth should be billed for at least one minute before use.

The initial boil water notice was sent out Tuesday evening after a mechanical failure at James White Wells, leading Fernie to switch to the Fairy Creek water supply.

It has since been downgraded to a water quality advisory after turbidity levels have decreased.
