Livestock transport rollover leaves animals deceased

The Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a crash in the westbound lanes of Highway 93 on October 31st, 2021.

RCMP officials said the driver was travelling westbound just north of Kootenay Crossing when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with the support structure curb at around 6:00 p.m.

Bystanders were able to help the driver out of the truck and the driver suffered no serious injuries.

According to the Columbia Valley RCMP, Parks Canada employees, a local towing company, local ranchers and police officers worked together to contain and assist the animals.

Injured hogs were treated on scene by a local veterinarian, but sadly some of the animals had already died.

“It’s not the typical collision we see in our area,” said Cpl. L-P. Gendron-Fafard, “but we are thankful for our local partners and everyone else who assisted in this matter.”

RCMP officials said traffic flow was slightly impacted while the investigation was ongoing but Highway 93 has since been fully reopened.
