Students are back to school this week, prompting safety warnings and reminders from RCMP as school zone speed limits are back in effect as of Tuesday, while school buses are back on the road.
“When you see a school bus with alternating flashing red lights, you must stop whether you are approaching it from the front or the rear,” said Columbia Valley RCMP.
Whenever a school bus is stopped, all vehicles must stop and wait until the flashing lights turn off and the school bus continues on its way.
RCMP said the fine for passing a school bus while its lights and stop sign are activated is $368.
“The fines for speeding in a school zone range from $196 to $483.”
Locally in Cranbrook, be alert for Safety Suzy as well as the decoy will be placed in the crosswalk, alerting motorists at pedestrian crossings to students potentially crossing the street to and from school.
