UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Ended

Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the East Kootenay region.

Including Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Sparwood, and the surrounding area, Environment Canada said conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain.

Environment Canada said that hail and strong wind gusts are also possible if a severe thunderstorm develops.

“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.”

With the Severe Thunderstorm Watch, Environment Canada reminds the public that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads and that if you hear thunder roar, to go indoors.
