Cranbrook City Council has greenlighted two additional applications for non-medical cannabis retail stores, moving the total number of approved retail cannabis stores in Cranbrook to five.
Although City Council has approved the five applications they’ve received, the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) holds the final authority to approve or deny the proposed licenses to operate in Cranbrook, pending the positive recommendation needed from the municipality.
“The Cannabis Control and Licensing Act prevents the LCRB from issuing a cannabis retail store license without a positive recommendation regarding the license application from the local government or Indigenous nation,” reads the Cranbrook City Council report.
The first fo the two most recent applications received was from West Coast Cannabis, proposing their non-medical cannabis retail store along Cranbrook Street North. West Coast Cannabis is proposing operating hours of 9:00 am to 11:00 pm seven days a week, and would utilize approximately 2,270 square feet of commercial space for their retail store.
West Coast Cannabis’ application is the third referral of six potential retail cannabis location permitted in the C-2 Highway Commerical Zone.
The second application was submitted by Prime Cannabis Inc. Cranbrook City Council heard that Prime Cannabis is proposing their non-medical cannabis retail store at 7th Avenue South, taking up one space in a 4-unit commercial complex at the location. Prime Cannabis Inc. is also proposing operating hours of 9:00 am to 11:00 pm seven days a week, with about 1,222 square feet of retail space.
Prime Cannabis Inc.’s application is second such referral of four potential retail cannabis stores allowed in the C-1 Community Commercial Zones.
Both of the referrals were in accordance with the City of Cranbrook’s zoning bylaws, leading to approvals from Cranbrook City Council.
Three other referrals have already been given positive feedback from City Council. One referral was for the government-operated BC Cannabis Store off of Vicotria Avenue near Save-On-Foods, another was for EK Cannabis at #12 – 9th Avenue South in downtown Cranbrook, and another was for Clarity Cannabis at 1325 Cranbrook Street North in the vacant space beside Starbucks.
The two most recent applications by West Coast Cannabis and Prime Cannabis Inc. have now since been sent back to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch with positive recommendations, still needing final approval from the LCRB before the retail stores can open their doors in Cranbrook.
