Cranbrook council has given three reading to a bylaw that will change up the city’s recreation fees and charges.
Last year the city raised fees by 10 to 15 per cent across the board, but council directed staff to review how the city assesses its recreation fees.
Staff are now recommending a benefits approach, which recreation and culture director Trevor Thors says will shake up their fees.
“This is a different perspective or way of looking at setting fees and charges,” he said.
“It is difficult as not many communities have gone down this path at this point. We feel that we’ve gone down it in a way that doesn’t effect our user groups drastically.”
Under the new plan, one month memberships include swimming, squash and drop-in hockey, all fees and charges schedules have been amalgamated into one schedule and punch passes are discounted compared to individual purchases.
More information on the changes can be found here.
If approved the changes will come into effect on Sept. 1, 2025 and run until Aug. 31, 2027.
It will be up for adoption at a future council meeting.
