Cranbrook updating firearms bylaw

The City of Cranbrook will be making some changes to its firearms bylaw, but that doesn’t mean residents can start firing.

Any discharge or use of a firearm or bow is still prohibited in the City of Cranbrook.

Violating the bylaw could result in a $5,000 or six months imprisonment.

The main change is to address an exemption that was left out of the previous bylaw.

“We did a review of it and the bylaw has been in place since 1994,” said corporate officer Marnie Dueck.

“We realized we were missing one provision to include an additional exemption for any contractors or employees of the provincial government who are doing work within the city’s boundaries.”

If approved by council, the change will allow government contractors and employees the ability to discharge firearms in a rightful performance of
their duties.

The bylaw change has been given three readings and will be up for adoption at a future council meeting.
