Slightly elevated turbidity levels continue to come through Cranbrook’s Phillips Reservoir means the city’s water quality advisory will remain in effect.
The advisory was initially issued on April 9, 2025, and will remain in place until further notice.
“Turbidity, which is currently sitting at about 1 NTU, is a measure of water clarity or how much matter is suspended in the water, like soil particles,” said the City.
“Increased turbidity can make it harder for the chlorination to do its job.”
City officials say turbidity is typically caused by run-off from snow melt and rain events and is common with surface water system.
“This increase in turbidity is likely because of the transition to spring weather encouraging a fast lake turnover which has stirred up sediment,” said the City.
Cranbrook and Interior Health recommend that children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems or anyone who wants additional protection use boiled water or find a safe alternative for drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or ice or when brushing teeth.
The City says you should bring water up to a rolling boil for at least one minute.
