Firefighters from Sparwood and Crowsnest Pass will face off for a charity hockey game to raise money for Angel Flight East Kootenay.

The teams will hit the ice in the Sparwood Arena on Saturday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m. for the 2025 Battle of the Bravest, with all proceeds going to Angel Flight.

“Angel Flight is such an important service for our community, it’s almost essential since the closest hospital for major medical procedures is an eight-hour drive away,” said Sparwood Fire Chief Sheldon Tennant.

“It was a no-brainer to partner up with Angel Flight as the charity of our choice.”

Tennant says the players may not be picked in the next NHL draft, but it will be a game for a good cause.

“We have some good hockey players out there, but some of us like myself haven’t skated too much this year,” said Tennant.

“It’s for fun and we’re using it as a relationship-building opportunity with our mutual aid partners.”

The benefits of team-building matchups, such as the Battle of the Bravest, have impacts off the ice as well.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the fire department to provide something for the community and raise some money for a good cause,” said Tennant.

“On the flip side, we’re also building those relationships that go a long way when we meet our mutual aid partners on the scene of an incident. It’s not the first time you’ve met these people, you’ve played hockey against them, so you know who they are.”

Tickets are available until the puck drops and you can get 50/50 tickets here or participate in the silent auction here.
