Water and sewer frontage tax increase given three readings

Cranbrook council has given three readings to an increase of water and sewer frontage tax.

If approved the water tax will be increased from $11 to $13 per metre of taxable frontage.

Sewer would be upped from $10 to $12.

Money raised from the frontage tax goes to annual water fund debt payments and contributions to the water capital reserve.

It would also see a two dollar increase every year, which Mayor Wayne Price says will help shore up those reserves in case any surprises pop up.

“We need to get out in front of this. A two dollar a year increase moving forward I think is realistic,” he said.

“We got caught and had estimates out there on what desludging was going to cost and we weren’t even close. All of a sudden we’re about $4.5 million short and we certainly don’t want to see that happen again.”

The increase from $11 to $13 per taxable metre is expected to raise an additional $362,363 with a total revenue of $2,360,071.
