Now that the Kootenay Springs building has been demolished, the city will turn their focus to the Knight’s Hall property clean up.
The Knight’s Hall building was demolished but a large debris pile remains as well as burnt vehicles.
Both the Knight’s Hall and the Kootenay Springs building were both under remediation orders from the city.
The former owner of the Kootenay Springs property didn’t comply with the order, but the property was sold and the demolition took place.
The owner of the Knight’s Hall property didn’t pay property taxes for three years, so it was put up for tax sale in September 2024.
There were no bidders and the property defaulted back to the city.
The city says clean work will happen but they have to wait a little while longer.
The original owner has one year after the tax sale to pay all the outstanding taxes to reclaim the property.
If the city were to clean the site up now, the owner could reclaim a more valuable property, with the tax payers paying the bill.
City staff say it is likely that no clean up work will occur until after the reclaiming deadline in September.
