An Elk Valley man was found guilty of mischief for damage done to the Fernie Aquatic Center several years ago.

On October 29, 2022, Aquatic Centre staff noticed rocks and dirt in the pool and broken glass on the pool deck.

Upon further investigation, staff found a large window was smashed, with rocks and glass falling into the pool below.

A local swim event with almost 100 youth and children was scheduled for that day, but it had to be cancelled due to the damage and following clean-up.

Police used DNA evidence found at the scene to identify and arrest a local man for the vandalism.

He was placed on probation and ordered to pay over $20,000 to cover damages, with a significant portion of the fine going to the Fernie Swim Club.

“I am glad that there is finally some resolution to this,” said Sgt. Brad Gregory, Elk Valley RCMP spokesperson.

“This is one that I am personally quite satisfied with, and proud of the investigation that Cst. Schmid completed to bring it to this conclusion.”
