The City of Cranbrook bylaw department is introducing a drone program to monitor city properties and land.
Bylaw services manager Paul Heywood says the use of a drone will improve access to hard to get to areas.
“The drone will become a useful tool for us to find obscure locations and patrol certain locations,” he said.
“Our officers have been training on the drone for quite a while now and have become very adept at it. It’s a lot more mobile than bikes or even a truck going out into the country roads.”
He says the city has completed a privacy impact assessment to adhere to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
“We have submitted all of our papers in terms of privacy, confidentiality and the storage of the drone footage,” he added.
City staff say The drone will also adhere to Transport Canada regulations concerning flight paths, weight and safety measures.
The city is expecting to start the program very soon.
