Traffic through several areas of Fernie will be impacted over the coming months as work on Montane Parkway and Cokato Road gets underway.

City officials say Parastone Developments Ltd. started work on Phase One today, Monday, March 31.

The first phase of the project will impact the T-intersection at Cokato Road and Montane Parkway from Monday to Thursday, April 3.

Crews will install a sanitary sewer line across the road, which means a temporary road closure for all traffic in the meantime.

Phase Two will begin on Wednesday, April 2, with work closing Montane Parkway until Saturday, May 31.

City officials say the contractor will complete sewer extension installation, road reconstruction and road surface paving.

Detour signs and flaggers will be in place to guide drivers along alternate routes.

“During this time, vehicle traffic will be re-routed using Slalom Drive to access Cokato Road. Pedestrian traffic will still be able to use the existing pedestrian pathway on the north side of Montane Parkway,” said the City.

“Impacted area residents have received written notice from the contractor outlining the project timeline, alternate routes, and potential impacts.”

The City says the project should be completed by June.
