City of Cranbrook removing American flags

The City of Cranbrook is removing American Flags in the community after complaints from the public.

American Flags were located at the entrance to Cranbrook and the Western Financial Place.

City staff say it was an oversight and flying an American flag goes against the city’s own flag policy.

The city believes it was erected as part of a sister city relationship with Coeur d”Alene, Idaho, but that  relationship hasn’t been active for a number of years.

The flag at the arena was due to the Wenatchee Wild being a part of the BCHL. The Wild have since left the league and the flag there is no longer necessary.

Counillor Norma Blissett says they should be following their policy anyways but especially now with an ongoing trade war with the United States.

“I think it’s important to follow our own policy. Remove the flag,” she said.

“It’s been an oversight that it’s been left up for all this time and particularly now with the threat against our country by that country it is very important to remove that flag.”

The city policy does not permit flying flags from other countries.
